John Leach - 60 Years A Potter

In: News On: Sunday, July 30, 2017

This July it will be 60 years since I started my apprenticeship with my father David. I spent five years as an apprentice working with four different potters - My father David Leach (Lowerdown Pottery), Colin Pearson (Aylesford Pottery), Ray Finch (Winchcombe Pottery) and finally my grandfather Bernard Leach (Leach Pottery, St. Ives - the place where I was born!).

Lizzie and I moved to Muchelney, Somerset in 1964 and opened the pottery in 1965 where we have worked ever since. I am still fascinated by form and I often say 'the next pot is going to be the best pot!'.

It has been a privilege to work with Nick Rees for 45 years and Mark Melbourne for 20 years. Together we feel fortunate to have earned our living doing something we love.
