"The biggest, best and
most important
thing I have ever made out of clay" |
 |
|
John Leach isn’t talking about a pot.
He’s describing the water wildlife haven he has created
on land near his pottery at Muchelney. The original idea
was to grow trees there - to compensate for the wood he
has to burn in the pottery kiln. The pond was almost an
afterthought. |
|
But whilst the 4,000 trees, some
already 60 feet high, and shrubs are quietly maturing,
the pond has become the vibrant centre of this
long-cherished conservation project. Now an official
County Wildlife Site, the pond has also become for John
an unfailing provider of creative impetus, peace and
renewal. |
|
“Simply sitting on its banks,
watching and listening to nature is so rewarding,” he
says. |

Painter,
sculptor, graphic artist and designer, Henri Matisse was one of
the great international artists of the 20th century. Born in
France in 1869, he worked tirelessly until his death in 1954. |
| Principal artist of the
Fauve group, his style is characterised by the use of flat patterns
with brilliant and pure colours, either juxtaposed or separated by
thin white lines or contours. |
